An alert store employee in Parry Sound thwarted a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam Wednesday, saving the would-be victim thousands of dollars.
OPP say the would-be victim was advised that he owed $6,000 to CRA and was directed to purchase Google Play gift cards.
He purchased $750 worth of cards at a local business and was at a second business to purchase more cards when an alert employee notified police of the suspicious activity. Police intervened and stopped the scam.
In a separate fraud Wednesday, the victim received a call from a man stating he was investigating a bank employee in Parry Sound. The victim was instructed to purchase $2,000 in Google Play gift cards, after which she would receive a $500 reward for assisting with the investigation.
The victim purchased the cards and provided the card information to the scammer. The incident is still under investigation.
Fraudsters may request payment via money service businesses, pre‐paid cards/gift cards (iTunes) or bitcoin.
