I thought your readers might like to know about the latest telephone scam I recently received. It’s a pre-recorded message that tells you that your ‘internet line has been compromised’, prompting you to enter a number that supposedly connects you with your provider. You’re one of several readers to flag this particular scam, so it’s definitely worth detailing to make sure no one end up giving the scammers any personal information.
There appears to be a couple of variants of these calls doing the rounds, the first of which uses a digitised recording of an American woman’s voice explaining your internet connection has been compromised by one or more countries and will be cut off within 24 or 48 hours. This is utter nonsense, and not to be believed.
Another version seems to involve calls made by actual people (one name that keep cropping up is Shirley) who will try and persuade you to open up your computer and head to anydesk.com. This site will allow the scammers to remotely access your computer, and you should never give permission for anyone to do so unless you completely trust their motives. These scammers may attempt to search your computer for private/financial information, or to embed malicious software to infect your system to do it for them. Don’t take the chance.
If you receive a call like this, hang up. If they haven’t withheld their number, you may want to contact your provider to get the number blocked. You can report scam calls to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cyber crime reporting centre through their website (https://www.actionfraud.police.uk), or give them a call on 0300 123 2040. Deaf or hard of hearing callers can use the textphone number 0300 123 2050.
